Actigraphy

actigraphy_plot.png

Actigraphy noninvasively measures cycles of activity and sleep (rest) over days or even weeks, typically to assess sleep disorders and other sleep-related criteria.

Use the Actigraphy Analysis licensed feature in AcqKnowledge® to record long-term accelerometer data of mobile subjects and then analyze sleep and activity patterns; correlate activity levels with GPS positioning for more detailed analysis.

General activity levels of the subject are recorded with a wireless tri-axial accelerometer (BioNomadix®, Mobita®, or BioHarness®), and the Actigraphy Analysis routine provides a general indication of Activity and Sleep patterns.

AcqKnowledge software records and reports Activity and Sleep as a plotted graph and spreadsheet that can easily be exported.

Activity Analysis

The Activity mode analyzes data collected from the subject throughout the day. It reports on the general level of activity evident in the accelerometry data and breaks it into low, medium and high activity levels. The following activity metrics are reported:

  1. Total low activity time
  2. Waking low activity time
  3. Total high activity time
  4. Total low activity %
  5. Waking low activity %
  6. Total high activity %
  7. Total medium activity time
  8. Waking medium activity time
  9. Waking high activity time
  10. Total medium activity %
  11. Waking medium activity %
  12. Waking high activity %
Sleep Analysis

The Sleep mode uses a zero crossing algorithm that breaks data into one minute windows as described in the publication by Sadeh A, Sharkey K, et. al. The algorithm then employs a sleep onset heuristic as reported by Cole R, Kripke D, et. al. The following sleep-related metrics are reported:

  1. Sleep onset
  2. Percentage of wake
  3. Sleep end
  4. Wake after sleep onset (WASO)
  5. Total sleep period length
  6. Sleep bouts
  7. Sleep time
  8. Wake bouts
  9. Percentage of sleep
  10. Mean sleep bout
  11. Wake time
  12. Mean wake bout

Students Get Smart

Science Night at Adams Elementary (Santa Barbara, CA) encourages students to discover, play, explore and learn about the importance of science and engineering in daily life. BIOPAC set up a BioNomadix Wireless Smart Center to allow students to record their heart rate. Electrodes were placed on students and leads were connected to a wireless transmitter that sent data […]

New Citations | Stimulation and Mental Processing

Recent developments regarding electric stimulation and mental processing have lead to interesting developments in psychophysiology and physiological sciences. The following studies look at developments in how we potentially care for and understand solutions to issues with mental health, as well as new ways to monitor electrical stimulus on participants. The ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is […]
