The Biopac Student Lab system is an integrated life science teaching solution that includes hardware, software and curriculum materials that students use in undergraduate laboratories to record data from their own bodies, animals, or tissue preparations. The BSL System features world-class hardware. BSL provides educators with the most sophisticated hardware in the industry, with a research-grade data acquisition platforms with built-in universal amplifiers to record and condition electrical signals from the heart, muscle, nerve, brain, eye, respiratory system, and tissue preparations. The data acquisition system receives the signals from electrodes and transducers and connects to a PC running BSL software on Windows® or macOS® operating systems.

BSL software guides students through BSL lessons with full-color onscreen instructions, a detailed lab manual, and embedded procedure videos and data samples. “Smart” electrodes and transducers employ sensors that allow the software to communicate with them to ensure that the students are using the correct devices and collecting good data; it’s like having a teaching assistant in a box. Once students collect data, they use included software tools to measure the amplitude and frequency, plus a wide range of other values from the electrical signals. Students can compare their results to published normal values, or the values before and after a subject performed a specified task. They can even compare their results with other students in the lab, and completed data reports can be saved, placed in a DropBox® account, or emailed to instructors for review, or saved on a networked server.

Students are fully engaged before, during, and after the lab. Extensive multi-media pre-lab materials familiarize the student with procedures, hardware, software, and model results. During the lab, students record data from their own bodies, animals, or tissue preparations. Each experiment is designed so that every student has the opportunity participate equally as Recorder, Subject, and Director—no passive standing and watching. Every piece of hardware and software facilitates a focus on the science, not the equipment. After the lab, results and measurements can be compiled into the data reports contained in the rich-text journals. The BSL system truly makes inspired teaching obtainable. BSL MP36 4-Channel Systems provide dynamic lessons and support student-designed experiments for general lab use or specific disciplines. Advanced systems support additional guided lessons on human subjects and Ultimate systems include animal labs.
