For educators who need a fast and easy-to-implement teaching solution, who desire to increase student engagement, or who wish to customize their instruction or extend learning with advanced lessons, the Biopac Student Lab (BSL) is the recognized leader in life science teaching systems and is in use in the top universities around the world.
The Biopac Student Lab system is an integrated life science teaching solution that includes hardware, software and curriculum materials that students use in undergraduate laboratories to record data from their own bodies, animals or tissue preparations. The system includes over sixty-five complete lessons that educators use as part of undergraduate lab courses.
Bring Your Lab to Your Students
BSL-HOME is a complete physiology lab solution for both students and instructors New "Learn & Return" program offers schools a way to provide a practical lab component to students outside of the lab. BIOPAC is introducing Biopac Student Lab Home (BSL-HOME)—a new product specifically geared towards teaching physiology labs remotely. BSL-HOME will allow your students to conduct physiology labs in the safety of their own home, dorm room, or any remote location. BSL-HOME can help you teach hands-on physiology labs while Coronavirus concerns require social distancing or stay-at-home orders.
The BSL System features world-class hardware. BSL provides educators with the most sophisticated hardware in the industry, with a research-grade 2- or 4-channel data acquisition platforms with built-in universal amplifiers to record and condition electrical signals from the heart, muscle, nerve, brain, eye, respiratory system, and tissue preparations. The data acquisition system receives the signals from electrodes and transducers and connects to a PC running BSL software on Windows® or macOS® operating systems.
BSL software then guides students through BSL lessons with full-color onscreen instructions, a detailed lab manual, and embedded procedure videos and data samples. “Smart” electrodes and
transducers employ sensors that allow the software to communicate with them to ensure that the students are using the correct devices and collecting good data; it’s like having a teaching assistant in a box.
Once students collect the data, they use included software tools to measure the amplitude and frequency, plus a wide range of other values from the electrical signals. Students can compare their results to published normal values, or the values before and after a subject performed a specified task. They can even compare their results with other students in the lab, and completed data reports can be saved, placed in a DropBox® account, or emailed to instructors for review, or saved on a networked server.
Engineered for ease of use, the BSL System offers unparalleled ease of implementation and use. Everything you need to get started—hardware, software, and curriculum--is included. Setup is fast and easy, and universal connectors, “smart” sensors, and on-screen prompts ensure hardware connections are made correctly. Lab manuals are available from leading publishers or BIOPAC. BSL’s curriculum and guided lessons provide educators with an out-of-the-box teaching solution that’s ready to use on day one.
Students are fully engaged before, during, and after the lab. Extensive multi-media pre-lab materials familiarize the student with procedures, hardware, software, and model results. During the lab, students record data from their own bodies, animals, or tissue preparations. Each experiment is designed so that every student has the opportunity participate equally as Recorder, Subject, and Director—no passive standing and watching. Every piece of hardware and software facilitates a focus on the science, not the equipment.
After the lab, results and measurements can be compiled into the data reports contained in the rich-text journals. The BSL system truly makes inspired teaching obtainable.
Extensive customization is easy. The new Curriculum Management System licensed feature allows educators to easily customize and control all aspects of the lesson content including the on-screen instructions, introductions, recording and analysis procedures, lesson preferences and data reports. Educators can create their own lessons with BSL PRO, and those lessons can be selectively distributed from the Master computer to all networked lab computers.
A full range of Advanced lessons with interactive learning are available for educators who desire to take their teaching to the next level or who teach advanced, graduate-level coursework. The BSL system grows as you grow a full range of customization options and advanced lessons in BSL Advanced, BSL Ultimate, and other BSL system options.

BSL systems are packaged to target specific school programs and include all hardware, software, and curriculum materials to cover key areas of the program.
The BSL Human Physiology Core Package is a logical starting point and provides a complete physiology lab with experiments covering the most widely studied responses. The 25+ Lessons cover:
Analysis can be performed online or off. The BSL Human Physiology curriculum is suitable for inquiry-based, active learning in 2-yr. and 4-yr. programs, medical schools, and nursing programs. Powerful setup and analysis tools also make the BSL ideal for graduate studies and personal research.
The BSL Human Physiology Core package contains
If you start with a Basic Human Physiology system in your lab, you can easily upgrade your hardware to create Advanced or Ultimate systems. Advanced and Ultimate packages add additional guided lessons on human subjects (BSL Advanced) or animals (BSL Ultimate).
Specialized Core Packages are also available for advanced learning in the areas of:
The BSL Introductory System and the BSL Health Sciences System are ideal for Nursing and Health Science programs and programs with very limited budgets, and a great way to add a physiology component to other programs—psychology, biomedical engineering, and others. These low-cost systems features the BIOPAC MP46 2-channel platform and the latest BSL software, along with accessories to conduct six or eleven key lessons in EMG, EEG, ECG, and EOG, and other physiological signals. Like the BSL Basic, Advanced, and Ultimate systems, this introductory package is ready-to-teach out of the box and drives student engagement and active learning.
