BIOPAC offers a variety of surface EMG (sEMG) recording and analysis options. sEMG data can be recorded with reusable or disposable surface EMG electrodes sent to a wired, wireless, or MRI-specific EMG amplifier. Hardware solutions range from single channel tethered EMG to 32 channel wireless, telemetered and logged data. Easily combine surface EMG with visual, auditory, electric or haptic stimulus presentation, camera systems, and other physiological signals for advanced studies.
For the best sEMG signal quality, check connections between subject and hardware and use an EL-CHECK impedance monitor to measure contact impedance between surface EMG electrodes attached to the subject. The EL-CHECK permits simultaneous connection of up to three electrode leads, for quick impedance checking between any two electrodes in the three connected sEMG leads: Active (Vin+), Reference (Vin-), and Ground (GND).

After recording surface EMG and any other signals of interest, use AcqKnowledge to analyze the data with powerful Automated EMG Analysis features.
Locate Muscle Activation
When performing gait analysis, exercise physiology, startle response, or other research, identification of periods where the muscle is active can allow for correlation of external factors to muscle activity. Locate Muscle Activation attempts to identify various periods of muscle activity using statistical methods. The transformation requires a raw, unfiltered surface EMG channel.
Derive Average Rectified EMG
Derive Integrated EMG
In addition to the true iEMG a second waveform whose value is the maximum value of the iEMG signal in each timeslice will also be output. This Maximum iEMG is easier to interpret visually and approximates the envelope of the iEMG signal.
Root Means Square EMG
RMS is one of a number of methods used to produce waveforms that are more easily analyzable than the noisy raw EMG.
EMG Frequency & Power Analysis
Several frequency domain techniques may be used for data reduction of surface EMG signals. The EMG Frequency & Power Analysis script extracts Median Frequency, Mean Frequency, Peak Frequency, Mean Power, and Total Power from the power spectrum of an EMG signal.
Drive External Devices
sEMG data can also be processed and directed to control other devices. For example, a wireless neuro-actuator prosthetic was created using BIOPAC’s wireless EMG hardware and additional custom hardware. The sEMG of both opponens pollicis (thumb flex) and pronator quadratus (wrist rotate) was recorded from the Subject’s palms and wrists, and the real-time, high-resolution surface EMG signal was processed to control the grip and rotation of remote handgrips.
