Somatosensory Evoked Response (SER)

Software controlled stimulator

BIOPAC provides hardware and software tools for recording and analyzing Somatosensory Evoked Responses (SSER). AcqKnowledge® and the MP System can deliver tactile stimulation through the TSD190 Haptic Stimulator Transducer. The transducer is connected to a subject and AcqKnowledge software delivers pulses that trigger the transducer to tap the subject for sensory stimulation (SST). The software can provide simple square waves or advanced random stimulus paradigms. When this particular transducer is combined with AcqKnowledge’s averaging mode, the system can be used for averaging-type sensory nerve tests to determine the speed of propagation and activation threshold of somatosensory nerves.

Somatosensory Evoked Potentials (SEP) can also be recorded and averaged using the STM100C with a suitable stimulus isolation adapter. Various points of the body can be used to generate the response including the median nerve at the wrist, the common peroneal nerve at the knee, and the posterior tibial nerve at the ankle. The STM100C provides the electrical stimulation and the ERS100C Evoked Response amplifier records the nerve response and AcqKnowledge’s averaging mode will record the average SEP response.

Perform somatosensory tests by using the MP System with a STM100C stimulator and either the STMISO series or a TSD109 Haptic Transducer.

  1. The STMISO series, used with the STM100C, will provide either voltage or current stimulation.
  2. The TSD109 will provide mechanical stimulation to provoke a tap sensation in the subject synchronously with neuronal recording. Drive a TSD109 directly from the STM100C stimulator and use the ERS100C amplifier to record the evoked potentials.

Using AcqKnowledge’s online averaging system allows the user to set the number of averages, recording length and the latency between averages. It also includes tools for artifact rejection. The averaging works with BIOPAC stimulators or third-party devices with a trigger pulse.
