BIOPAC Human Physiology Conference Recap

BIOPAC TrainingAcademics and professionals in the field of human physiology gathered at UCSB for the inaugural 4T Physiology Conference. BIOPAC coordinated the three day conference held in late July, which attracted attendees from 26 different countries. The attendees gathered to learn the latest tools, trends, techniques and technology used in life science measurement and interpretation.

The three-day conference allowed researchers to learn the best practices for physiological acquisition directly from tech innovators. Among presenters were renowned academics, locally and from around the country, including talks from Jim Blascovich Ph. D., Terry Blumenthal Ph.D., and Jenny Robinson Ph.D. Members of the BIOPAC team provided insight on methods of acquisition for various physiological data signals such as EDA, EMG, and EEG; including Alan Macy who presented on subjects ranging from better MRI techniques to the importance of measuring affect and emotional states.

Other workshops included presentations on recent developments in physiological research technology from leading tech companies such as E-Prime, fNIR Devices, and CNSystems (NIBP). Andrew Beall of the Santa Barbara based virtual reality company, WorldViz, addressed how creating an immersive environment allows for a new take on physiological experimentation. An attendee responded, “I really enjoyed seeing and learning about new devices and software that may interest my lab.”

UCSB provided the perfect location for educators and researchers to gather. As one attendee responded, “It was very informative and quite a good conference, I loved spending time in Santa Barbara and would hate if it moved from there in the future!”
