fNIRS Imaging Education System

fNIRS Optimized for Education

Easy to Use—short prep & learning curve

Cutting-edge NIRS technology with user-friendly tools

The fNIRS Education System is a complete solution for educators, including curriculum materials, hardware, and software to record, process, and analyze up to 6 optodes of NIR spectroscopy (NIRS) data. The stand-alone fNIRS Imaging System provides in-lab cognitive function assessment and eliminates a great many of the drawbacks of a functional MRI.

fNIRS optical imaging technology measures neural activity and hemodynamic response in the prefrontal cortex. Subjects wear an fNIR sensor (IR light sources and detectors mounted in a flexible band) on the forehead that detects oxygen levels in the prefrontal cortex and provides real-time values for oxyhemoglobin and deoxygenated hemoglobin. It provides a continuous and real-time display of the oxygen changes as the subject performs different tasks.

Subjects can sit in front of a computer and take a test or perform mobile tasks. fNIRS applications include Brain Computer Interface, Human Performance Assessment, Neurorehabilitation, Depth of Anesthesia Monitoring, and more.

fNIR Education Systems for continuous NIR spectroscopy (NIRS) include

  • Imager 2000E control unit (6-optodes max)
  • Sensor and Cable
    • fNIR2000E includes one 6-channel sensor and one sensor cable
  • fNIRSoft and COBl Software
    • Software for data collection and analysis (the included software may change with a 30-day notice; if the included software changes, existing licensees will receive the replacement software)
  • NIRS Labs for Brain Function and Muscle Oxygenation
    • Lessons F01-F04 provide step-by-step guides for 9 student-friendly exercises measuring changes in deoxygenated (Hb) and oxygenated (HbO2) hemoglobin during cognitive and neuromuscular tasks. Students record NIRS measurements from the forehead and the forearm at two wavelengths, 730 nm for deoxy-Hb and 850 nm for oxy-Hb.
